If you can’t get enough bass in your Sonos sound system, the smart audio company has a clever solution. Sonos has confirmed that users can now add a second Sonos Sub to their home cinema set-up. Those who want to double-up on bass to really rattle the walls and annoy the neighbours will need to already own either a Sonos Arc, Sonos Beam, Playbar or Playbase, to add the second subwoofer.
The software update first started to roll out to Sonos customers last month. To add a second Sonos Sub, you’ll need to be running the Sonos S2.
For those who don’t know, the transition to the S2 app was a dramatic shift from Sonos and left some older speakers, like the first-generation Sonos Play:5, unable to use the latest features. Sonos users who wanted to upgrade to the new app had to exercise these out-of-support speakers from their set-up, or hold back all of their kit from the latest features, like the ability to add a second Sonos Sub to the mix, for example.
According to Sonos, the ability to pair two Subs has been “a frequently requested feature” by both customers and professional installation partners. Adding a second Sub to the mix promises to add more low-end for the bass-obsessed and should also ensure those with larger home theatre rooms can be truly immersed into the sound. And even with the TV switched off, Sonos users can use the app, a smart assistant like Alexa, or AirPlay 2, to beam music to the set-up.

One of the Sonos Subs in your set-up will need to be a third-generation Sub as this packs the additional processing power to handle the dual output. If you’ve got all the right kit, head to the Play Store or App Store to ensure your Sonos app is up-to-date, and you should be ready to add the extra boom.
The news comes as Sonos purportedly plans to expand its portfolio with a pair of over-ear noise-cancelling headphones. These premium cans will seemingly compete with the likes of the Apple AirPods Max and Sony WH-1000XM4. Reports suggest these will work via Bluetooth, although as you return home, you’ll be able to instantly beam your current song, podcast, or radio station to the Sonos system in your home. Likewise, when you’re leaving – you will be able to take your current playlist with you, reports suggest.
Sonos has already experimented with this idea with its Sonos Move, which acts as a standard Wi-Fi controlled speaker at home, but becomes a portable Bluetooth speaker when you want to take it to the park, BBQ, or pool in summer.
