LG’s all-new gram-branded laptops are arriving in UK stores this week and these Windows 10-powered PCs include a big change to their displays. Like a number of other manufacturers, LG has decided to switch things up this year and launch its laptops with a 16:10 aspect ratio rather than the standard 16:9 screen.

The Korean firm says it decided to opt for this new screen shape to offer more screen real estate. In basic terms, this new ratio is a little taller and less elongated, which isn’t quite as good for your next movie binge, but brings more space for Word documents, emails and web searches.

The display has also had its bezels reduced for even more display area and the high-resolution panel boasts improved picture quality with LG stating that gram produces vibrant, accurate colours, excellent contrast and sharp details. Along with that display boost, there are plenty more features tucked inside these new laptops including an 11th Gen Intel Core processor with Iris Xe Graphics and speedy LPDDR4x memory.

Some of the new models also feature 80Wh high-density batteries to ensure longer periods of use between charges and there’s the option to buy the gram with a 2-in-1 design which transforms it from a laptop into a tablet.

With the name “gram” splashed across its case, you’d expect these devices to be pretty lightweight and LG says it has worked hard to bring a big-screen experience without sacrificing portability. In fact, the flagship LG gram 17 boasts a large 17-inch screen while only weighing 1.35kg (2.98lbs).

Equally transportable, the new LG gram 16 and 14 tip the scales at just 1.19kg (2.62lbs) and 999g (2.2lbs) respectively and are a scant 1.68cm (0.66 inch) thick.

“At LG we recognise the importance of lightweight portability and how vital this is to the many people still working from their homes throughout the UK,” said Hanju Kim, IT Product Director, LG UK “With sleeker, more refined designs and 16:10 aspect ratio displays while maintaining light weight, our latest LG gram lineup gives people the ability to enjoy better productivity and more immersive viewing experiences wherever they go.”
