The track reached Number 10 in America, which is an incredible feat for a young artist, and hit Number One in the UK.
Sir Tom was a hit machine in his early days, and released many other hugely successful songs in his first full year as an artist, with What’s New Pussycat also coming out in 1965 and reaching Number Three in the USA.
The beginning of 1966 also brought some more hits, with James Bond theme song Thunderball coming out this year, while he also broke The Beatles’ Christmas Number One streak with his December song Green, Green Grass of Home.
