‘Found What I’ve Been Looking For’ singer reveals he wants to be six years ahead of his time on his second album.
Tom Grennan has told NME he has begun planning his second album, even though he has yet to release his first record.
Grennan releases his debut album ‘Lighting Matches’ in two weeks on July 6.
Speaking to NME backstage at Isle Of Wight Festival, Grennan revealed he has begun writing new songs for a follow-up to ‘Lighting Matches’, and that he wants “to sound like an alien” on his second album.
Grennan, who played at Isle Of Wight Festival’s Big Top tent last night (June 22), said: “I’ve not been thinking about trying to write songs, but I’m writing them anyway. I haven’t finished any songs in full, but I’ve got ideas for my second album.”
Explaining how he wants to progress his sound, Grennan said: “I want it to sound like 2025, but in 2019. I haven’t worked out how I’m going to achieve that yet, but I want it to sound like I’m an alien.”
Grennan admitted he wouldn’t be writing songs as “mad” as Arctic Monkeys’ new album ‘Tranquility Base Hotel And Casino’ in his attempts to move his music on. Grennan said: “My lyrics won’t be as mad as Alex Turner’s new songs. There’s lyrics on that new album where you go ‘What? That’s mental.’ I’m not calling Alex out, as I mean they’re mental in a good way. But that style isn’t for me. I want to sound like an alien has just come to Earth and is looking around excitedly, going ‘Yes. What are you saying, planet Earth?’”
‘Lighting Matches’ contains Grennan’s singles ‘Found What I’ve Been Looking For’, ‘Royal Highness’, ‘Something In The Water’, ‘I Might’, ‘Sober’ and ‘Barbed Wire’. It was originally planned for release in March, before being delayed to July. Grennan said: “March didn’t feel right, the stars weren’t aligned for that date. I’m not saying my album is all festival summer anthems – it’s half and half. July just feels right, maybe as I’m a June baby.”
Before becoming a singer, Grennan was on the books of several football teams, including Luton Town, Stevenage Borough and Aston Villa. But he admitted he would never have been good enough to make England’s World Cup squad. He said: “I was a decent footballer, but my attitude stunk as a teenager and I wasn’t ever going to be good enough to be an international. I have watched as much of this World Cup as I can, though. The results have been weird, but it’s been a good tournament. I can’t wait for England’s next game on Sunday (June 24) against Panama, as that’s the one where I think we can win 4-0.”
