Sony got off to a great start in 2020, and it was recently revealed that the company had sold more PS5 consoles than PlayStation 4 during the year in the UK.
What makes this more interesting is that the PlayStation 5 has been available to buy since November, and still managed to beat a console available for ten months longer.
Not only that, but the PS5 also beat Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Series S, both of which entered the market at around the same time.
Games Industry.biz shared the news online, revealing that the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in 2020, followed by the PS5.
The report from Games Industry confirms: “Across all devices, including handhelds, 3.16 million games machines were sold in 2020. That’s a big rise of 29.4% over 2019.
“The winner of the year was Nintendo Switch, which was the best-selling games console in the UK for 11 of the 12 months in 2020. Switch sales are up 52.2% last year compared with 2019, which offset the 35.3% drop for PS4 and the 42.3% drop for Xbox One.
“The second best-selling console of 2020 was the PlayStation 5, despite only being on sale since mid-November (and with Sony struggling to supply the demand). The PS5 very narrowly outsold the PS4, which is in third position.”
Other analysts have also shared their own data on the situation, with Benji Sales sharing on Twitter:
“Despite a global record debut PlayStation 5 is now actually selling slower than PS4 did launch aligned in multiple markets (for example both Japan and UK).
There are rumours that a PS5 restock is coming this week and could start as soon as January 14.
This remains a rumour, for now, meaning we can’t know when more PlayStation 5 consoles will be available to try and buy.
And even if we do get a big update this week from Currys, Argos, Very, Smyths and GAME, there probably won’t be enough stock to help everyone.
One thing that gamers have noticed is that it’s easier to buy a PS5 if its part of a bundle deal.
Fans believe this is down to scalpers and bots avoiding them, along with the inflated price.
Scalpers avoid snapping up PlayStation 5 bundles because they can’t sell the other pieces for a bloated price.
